On
Monday Tucson P. D. Officer Ryan Remington was working as contract
private security at a WalMart when he had a confrontation with Richard
L. Richards. Officer Remington approached Richards, who was believed to
have shoplifted a tool box from the WalMart. A WalMart employee had
approached Richards as Richards was leaving the store and asked to see
as receipt for the tool box. Richards pulled a knife, said " Here's
your receipt" and kept going.
Officer
Remington approached Richards, who was in his motorized wheel chair, or
possibly a mobility assist scooter, in the Lowe's parking lot next
door. (Those motorized wheelchairs can be fast.) The officer directed
Richards to stop and put down the knife. Richards is said to have
responded, "If you want me to put down the knife you will have to shoot
me." About this time a second cop showed up.
Richards
proceeded to roll towards a nearby store (presumably Lowe's) still in
possession of the knife. The cops warned him not to enter the store.
Officer Remington then fired nine rounds into Richards, into his back
thru the motorized chair. Richards then fell out of the chair, dead.
The
day after the shooting Officer Remington was fired by the Tucson P.D.
(I guess they don't have a Peace Officer's Bill of Rights in Arizona.)
He had four years on the job.
Remington
has a lawyer, who is pointing out that the edited pieces of video that
are being shown on the news give a very distorted picture of what
actually happened.
