KJP's not just out - she should be ashamed. But instead, the top White House talker is trying to weasel out of this one.
The question of whether or not the President of the United States is worried about surging Jew-hatred in America isn't just a softball - it's a beach ball on a batting tee.
Yet somehow, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre swung at it and missed - not once, not twice, but three times.
KJP's not just out - she should be ashamed. But instead, the top White House talker is trying to weasel out of this one.
Not on my watch.
'What is [President Biden's] level of concern right now about the potential rise of antisemitism in light of everything that's going on in Israel?' asked a reporter in the White House briefing room on Monday.
A flummoxed Jean-Pierre looked down at the podium and her trusty black binder of pre-approved answers.
'Look, we have not seen any credible threats,' she blabbed – unresponsively. 'I know there's always been questions about credible threats.'
In fact, there was no question about 'credible threats'.
There was a very benign inquiry about what Biden thinks of America's city streets and college campus being filled by hysterical activists advocating for the murder of Jews.
Then, glancing down at her talking points, Jean-Pierre bizarrely pivoted.
'Look, Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim have endured a disproportionate number of hate-fueled attacks.'
I'm sorry, what? Even some Democrats were alarmed by the blundering Binder Queen.
There was a very benign inquiry about what Biden thinks of America's city streets and college campus being filled by hysterical activists advocating for the murder of Jews.
'What a weak answer,' boomed Rep. Jared Moskowitz on Twitter. 'Why are you looking in the book? What's the approved answer? The simple answer is yes, you are concerned about the rise of antisemitism…'
After that atrocious news conference, a humiliated Jean-Pierre lamely tried to clean it all up – with a tweet.
'To be clear, the president and our team are very concerned about a rise in antisemitism.'
Sorry, when you have to clarify your position on something as clear cut as antisemitism – you've failed. Either our White House automaton has blown a fuse or we're witnessing an administration lose its backbone in real-time.
I suspect the latter.
Perhaps most tellingly, it wasn't until nearly 24-hours later that Jean-Pierre put out another statement claiming this was all a big misunderstanding.
'I did mishear the question,' she claimed.
Really?
At my most charitable (and in full recognition of the fact that the second-worst communicator in the White House behind the president is ironically his press secretary), I may give KJP the benefit of the doubt, but not here.
Witness how she repeatedly downplayed the rising threat of antisemitism throughout that news conference.
'Does the President view anti-Israel protests and sentiment on college campuses as antisemitism?' asked another journalist.
'So, look,' she sighed, seemingly annoyed, 'I'm not going to get into what's happening across the country in — at different universities. I'm not going to get into the specifics… the First Amendment right — right?'
Right. But the First Amendment protects horrid speech, it does not prevent a sitting president from condemning it. And when has this White House let the First Amendment stop them before.
Here's KJP in April amid conservative backlash against Bud Light's sponsorship of transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney: 'We should be able to speak out… against hate and discrimination. That type of dangerous rhetoric, that type of vitriolic language and violence, that needs to stop.'
See? Not so hard.
So, why does the White House freely castigate those who use the wrong pronouns but freeze up when it comes to condemning calls to kill?
Democratic Florida Rep. Jared Moskowitz nailed Jean-Pierre on X Monday for her answer calling it 'weak' and asking why she needed to page through her briefing book to say the rise of antisemitism was a concern
'So, look,' KJP sighed, seemingly annoyed, 'I'm not going to get into what's happening across the country in — at different universities. I'm not going to get into the specifics… the First Amendment right — right?'
Biden's own FBI, DHS and National Counterterrorism Center aren't dismissing the menace so easily. They warned this week that the climbing number of domestic hate crimes suggest that 'targeted violence' against Jews, Muslims and Arabs will spike.
And what of last weekend's violent 'Flood Brooklyn for Palestine' protests in New York City where thousands marched in support of the goals of Hamas?
Was that not in the binder?
Demonstrators shut down traffic, reportedly threw eggs at police, lit fires in the streets and fought with cops, who tried to calm them down.
'We are calling for full liberation of all of Palestine… to every single inch, from river to the sea,' shouted one protester, echoing the calls of Islamist terrorists to wipe Israel off the map.
'Say it loud, say it clear, we don't want no Zionists here,' a cute rhyme, but bigoted, no?
'We will free Palestine within our lifetime!' others cried, holding signs reading, 'Resistance is justified when people are occupied,' which is blatant support for the slaughter of innocents.
It's more Beirut than Bay Ridge.
And it's unimaginable that President Biden, who recently preached that 'silence' in the face of bigotry 'is complicity' would punt on a chance to condemn support for terrorists.
Perhaps the third time would be the charm for Biden's mouthpiece.
Nope.
Asked if the President has any plans to directly address deeply misguided college students cheering on the murder of Jews Jean-Pierre said, 'I don't have anything to lay out on any specific conversations or outreach that the President is going to do to students.'
It's unimaginable that President Biden, who recently preached that 'silence' in the face of bigotry 'is complicity' would punt on a chance to condemn support for terrorists. Perhaps the third time would be the charm for Biden's mouthpiece. Nope.
By Tuesday afternoon, she was back at the podium with a new statement in front of her, and this time she said all the right things. But I can't help but be left with a sickening feeling in the pit of my stomach.
Borrowing the language of the left, was she telling her truth the first time or the second?
To me, it's not a question. And what's truly alarming about all of this is how quickly the cowardice came on.
When the Israel/Gaza war first broke out the press secretary was a bright shining ethical light slamming progressive Democrats and left-wing lunatics who refused to denounce Hamas.
'We're going to continue to be very clear,' she scolded at the time. 'We believe they're wrong. We believe they're repugnant and we believe they're disgraceful.'
Good for her. But by 'continue,' she apparently meant for the next two weeks.
Now as Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib continues to push Hamas propaganda blaming Israel for an attack on the Baptist Hospital in Gaza that's been widely attributed to terrorists – the White House has nothing more to say.
As the United Nations Secretary General suggests on Tuesday that Israeli policy somehow invited the Hamas attacks – we hear nothing.
One can feel the tectonic plates of public support shifting beneath Israel – and I fear the White House is being carried with it.
Could it be that political calculations have gotten in the way of their conscience?
'Americans and Muslims Americans like me. We will remember where you stood,' Tlaib ominously warned the White House last week.
Is the White House worried about losing the anti-Israel fringe of the party? Is that what's making it so difficult for Jean-Pierre to condemn surging Jew-hate in America?
Whatever the reason its bad news for America and worse for American Jews, who are now walking around with a target on their backs.
Moral clarity at the White House is growing cloudy when we need it to be at its most clear.
