San Francisco, Oakland and San
Jose will soon start deploying speed enforcement cameras. Previously in
CA a ticket could only be issued by a cop who saw the actual violation
personally. The cameras will (allegedly) be deployed in high risk areas
such as school zones or areas where "side shows" often occur.
It is not clear how long it will take the cameras to be nailed by paint ball guns or otherwise damaged or defaced.
At
first the malefactors will receive only a nasty gram. After the first
30 days fines will start at $50, if you are rich and/or White, and $10
if you are not. Really. The cameras will only pick up license plates
and are by law not allowed to use facial recognition. The cameras will
not trigger unless you are doing at least 11 mph over the limit.
