Johns
Hopkins University is without a doubt one of the premier medical
institutions in the world. Their Monthly Diversity Digest, since
retracted (hence the gutless declaration), listed PRIVILEGE as the word
of the month. They define the word as, "a set of unearned benefits
given to people who are in a specific social group" within the United
States. This digest further asserted that "privilege is granted to
people who have membership in one or more of these social identity
groups: White people, able-bodied people, cisgender people,
heterosexual people, Christians, males, middle class or owning class
people, English speaking people and middle-aged people."
Shortly
after the excrement hit the air circulation device Dr. Sherita H.
Golden, the chief diversity officer of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Office
of Diversity, Inclusion and Health Equity, expressed "regret" for the
wording of the digest. She described it as both overly simplistic and
poorly written. She both retracted and disavowed the digest. You
notice she didn't say it was wrong.
