Betty
Williams, who has served as the president of the Sacramento branch of
the NAACP for 15 years, was suspended by the NAACP for alleged
financial misappropriations
It appears that the Sacramento
CA NAACP officers may very well have used the organization for a
personal piggy bank and seem to have diverted a large chunk of money
that was supplied by the county for a covid-era food delivery program to
other purposes, such as hiring themselves to not do things.
Chapter
President Betty Williams and Education Chair Salena Pryor as well as
four others in the organization were suspended in October by the
national organization for suspicion of financial improprieties. Both of
them had outside business interests.
1SolutionLLC,
owned by Williams, and Pryor Consulting, owned by Pryor, were both
hired as independent contractors to administer the county food
insecurity program. This program ran for 15 months in 2022 and 2023. A
total of slightly over $225,000 were paid to Williams and Pryor by this
program. The county contract specifically prohibited contractors from
having financial interests in work agreed to in the contract.
The
restaurant owners who provided food for the program had to wait MONTHS
to be paid. They were required to sign non-disclosure agreements with
Williams and declined to complain, fearing negative backlash from
Williams.
County officials
are looking into the financial situation surrounding the program. It is
not a criminal investigation. Yet.
