Vanessa Joy, who was born a man and is now pretending to
be a woman, gathered sufficient signatures to run for the Ohio House
District 50 seat. She was, however, kicked off the ballot because the
law in Ohio requires that candidates disclose all previous names used in
the prior five years on her candidate petition. There are a few
exceptions, including marriage. The law was passed in 1995 so it isn't
exactly ancient. However, the official Ohio Candidate Handbook does NOT
mention this requirement.
Joy
officially changed her name, and her birth certificate. She asserts
that she was unaware of this law and no one is accusing her of lying
about it.
