The Douglas County, Colorado, ordinance seeks to discourage bus companies from dropping off migrants in the area.
DOUGLAS COUNTY, CO - The Commissioner of Douglas County, home to a large
Republican population, announced on "Fox & Friends" that his
community is not a sanctuary city and that a new ordinance put into
place reflects just that.
According to Fox News,
the county is taking direct action to actively combat the illegal
immigrant crisis plaguing their county by putting bus companies on
notice that they cannot stop or drop off illegal immigrants in their
community. Commissioner George Teal told "Fox & Friends" co-host
Lawrence Jones, "No more freeloading. We thought this ordinance was
required to make sure that we can keep our community safe."
Under the newly passed ordinance, buses dropping off "commercial
passengers" in "unplanned locations" within Douglas County could face
fines of up to $1,000 per passenger and buses may be seized by local law
enforcement, if the sheriff dubs it a "public nuisance." The
legislation comes as many other Colorado communities try to distance
themselves from Denver, which does advertise itself as a sanctuary city.
Denver is now plagued by illegal immigrants.
Teal said in a statement, "Denver got on the bandwagon of the anti-Trump
fad of declaring a sanctuary city early, among Democrat cities across
the nation. We're not a Democrat county. We're a community that is
mostly Republican. We were never going to be a sanctuary county."
Officials in Monument took an actual formal vote to affirm the town's
status as a "non-sanctuary city" as fears amongst their community grew
about the possibility of illegal immigrants leaving Denver for nearby
communities.
According to reports, the illegal immigrant crisis has put a large
financial strain on the city of Denver and as a result, the city is
scaling back its services. Back in February, Denver Mayor Mike Johnson
announced that the city would be closing four shelters that housed
illegal immigrants. In doing so, the city would reallocate nearly $60
million back into services for their community.
Johnson said that the illegal immigrants housed in those shelters would
not be "kicked out" after the closures, but instead would be moved to
different facilities. Teal said, "We know that it's just a matter of
time before Denver starts diverting buses here into Douglas County.
We're to the south of Denver, right between Denver and Colorado Springs
and that's why we did this ordinance so that when that happens, we're
prepared."
Teal added, "As we've all checked and found out, President Trump isn't
the president anymore, at least not yet again. Right now, it's President
Biden, one of their own Democrats and yet they still continue these
policies that they're starting to regret."
According to the Gazette,
Texas has sent over 17,300 illegal immigrants to Denver since May 2023
and a total of 108,600 across the entire country. In March, 137,000
illegal immigrants were apprehended at the 2,000-mile southern border.
That number is in addition to the more than 10 million illegal
immigrants who have reportedly entered the United States illegally since
President Joe Biden took office. It is the most recorded in that amount
of time of any administration in the history of the United States.
