HOMELESS CHILDREN AND WINOS

On Saturday’s NBC Today show there was a segment on children in a homeless shelter. That got me to thinking about homelessness. I’ll bet that when we think of the homeless the first thing that comes to mind is a bunch of drunken winos. We don’t think about the plight of homeless families, especially homeless children, because we do not want to think about such a troubling matter.

Unlike the mentally ill, the stressed-out war veterans, and the plain old winos that are roaming the streets, those homeless children had no say-so in being born and are homeless through no fault of their own. What a terrible way to grow up in this land of plenty.

Many families are now homeless because they were dealt a bad hand in this depressed economy or because they made some poor choices. In either case, it is the innocent children who suffer the most.

Homeless children and homeless winos are not one and the same. Those poor children will spend the approaching Christmas holidays homeless. I do not have a solution to put forth for solving the homeless problem, but I do know that in America, the wealthiest and most fortunate nation on earth, children should not have to suffer the pangs of homelessness.
