LIVING UNDER THE FEAR OF VIOLENT CRIME

I watched Saturday’s NBC Evening News report about the rescue by Venezuelan police of kidnapped Washington Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos. NBC included a clip which had a security expert saying that Venezuelan law and order had collapsed under the weight of violent crime – kidnappings, carjackings, robberies. His remarks were obviously meant to be a dig at President Hugo Chavez.

The security expert said something like, “Can you imagine how the Venezuelans must feel living under the fear of violent crime?”

Well now, how about the Americans that live in Oakland, Stockton, St. Louis, Baltimore, Detroit and – let’s not forget - D.C., our nation’s capital? They and the Americans living in a number of other cities do not need to use their imagination because they sure as hell know what it feels like to live under the fear of violent crime.
