A former guest of the state is now back in custody after a serious fist-fight with a Oakland PD captain.
Dantjuan McElroy, 30, was on parole for DUI and was known to Captain Ersie Joyner III when Captain Joyner spotted hm driving a Mercedes on International Blvd in Oakland about 7:00 pm yesterday. He spotted the car make a U-turn and noticed it matched the description of a suspect vehicle in a robbery.
Captain Joyner followed the car to 91st and D. St where McElroy, the passenger, bailed out and ran. He was carrying what is described as a semi-automatic weapon resembling a .45 caliber submachine gun, presumably a Thompson carbine. The Captain pursued McElroy, who also dropped a bag of weed along the way and threw the gun over a fence into a back yard.
The Captain and McElroy duked it out for what is described as “several minutes” before backup arrived and Tasered McElroy’s happy ass.
The car and driver are still being sought.
Maybe it’s just me but I find it remarkable that they had a Captain out on solo patrol and that he managed to go toe-to-toe with a 30-year old parolee for several minutes.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Maybe the captain and other command officers have to go out on patrol to help fill in the gap left when the near-bankrupt city of Oakland laid-off so many officers.
