A California substance-abuse counselor was sentenced today to 55-years to life as a guest of the state for running down a pedestrian, then driving around with him imbedded in her windshield.
Sherri Lynn Wilkins, 53, was convicted of second-degree murder, DUI and hit-and-run driving in connection with the November, 2012 incident which resulted in the death of Phillip Moreno, 31. Wilkins drove an estimated two miles through Torrance until other motorists swarmed her car and held her for the local constabulary. Moreno died in the hospital.
Wilkins claimed that she was not drunk at the time, rather that she was self-medicating with vodka and Budweiser. Wilkins had an extensive though non-violent criminal history. She was sentenced as a three-striker.
