‘I took a path of darkness instead of light’: President’s former lawyer Michael Cohen tearfully lays the blame for his fraud and lies on 'blind loyalty’ to cover up the 'dirty deeds' of Trump, as he is jailed for THREE YEARS

Donald Trump’s former right-hand man Michael Cohen will spend 36 months in a federal prison in upstate New York for his lies, fraud and campaign finance violations, a federal judge in New York has ruled. He will also pay almost $2 million in fines and forfeitures.

Cohen wept in court as he pleaded to avoid jail and spoke of how he had covered up Donald Trump’s ‘dirty deeds’ – a reference to secret payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal to buy their silence before the election on claims of sex with Trump.

At the hearing in Manhattan U.S District Judge William Pauley III said the ex-fixer had committed a ‘smosgabord’ of crimes but gave him a less severe sentence than prosecutors had wanted because, he said, Cpohen had co-operated with Robert Mueller’s probe. An attorney for Mueller said Cohen, 52, he had provided ‘useful’ information.

Cohen’s wife Lauren, daughter Samantha, and son Jake watched him being sentenced. He will report to medium-security Otisville Federal Correctional Facility on March 6.

Trump says Cohen’s crimes are his own fault.
