Horrifying surveillance footage captured from outside a home in California shows the moment a man runs over his baby niece with a three ton truck before fleeing the scene.

The nightmare accident happened in the driveway of a family home in southwest Fresno, California on Tuesday.

Footage from a neighbor's home shows 23-month-old Zayliah Medina walking in the yard before stepping in front of the truck her uncle, 33-year-old Eddie Alvarado, was preparing leave in.

Mere moments later, Alvarado is seen pulling out of the driveway and crushing the young child, before quickly driving off.

Fresno police Chief Jerry Dyer said in a press conference the department later learned another relative came after Alvarado and physically assaulted him.

The assault is assumed to be a retaliation for Alvarado trampling the child and then fleeing.

Dyer said in the conference: 'Alvarado would not tell us who physically assaulted him.

'Information was it was possibly family members who did this in retaliation for what he did to the child.'

Medina's mother rushed the baby to the Valley Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to WVTM 13, Medina has been left with head trauma, spinal trauma, injuries to her organs and broken bones as a result.

Dyer said: 'The mother stated that she did not want to get her step-brother in trouble.

'Even though she knew it was an accident, (and) and he was driving without a license.'

Alvarado was booked Wednesday on hit-and-run charges.

Dyer added in the conference: 'Had he just simply called the police department and reported the collision, that would've been the end of this.

'He would not have been arrested.'

The mother may also face charges for failing to report the crash.
