With 242 people on board, Air India flight AI171 crashed shortly after takeoff in Ahmedabad, India
The number of fatalities is not yet known but rescuers said at least 30 bodies have so far been recovered from a building. The tail of the Dreamliner is pictured protruding from the building it struck
The first Boeing 787 known to have crashed went down
today in India. It impacted the housing area of a medical school
shortly after take-off while in route to London.
My
very limited data based (gained from watching Air Disasters on the
Smithsonian Channel) tells me that when a plane crashes very soon after
takeoff it is seldom a problem with the aircraft itself.
Boeing stock took a modest dip at the news.

I'll wager most survivors were in the rear of the plane.
I was wrong. Seat 11A held the only survivor who walked away from the wreckage out of the emergency exit door where he was sitting.
