Children playing in their backyard pool narrowly avoided catastrophe when a police cruiser ploughed through the fence and into the water.

A Houston Police vehicle was pursuing another car which was driving erratically with the lights on but no siren about 5.35pm on Sunday.

The police SUV, during the pursuit, struck a white Land Rover and lost control, smashing through the fence of a home and coming to land in the backyard pool.

The homeowner told ABC13 her children were in the pool at the time of the crash, but not directly in the path of the car.

Miraculously, they were unharmed in the incident.

The HAZMAT team was called to respond to the incident because the cruiser's gas tank began to leak after the crash

Shocking pictures captured by KPRC showed the car dangling precariously over the pool.

The officer was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries to his leg.

The driver of the Land Rover was also reportedly not injured.

Houston Fire Department Senior Captain Ross Emblad said everyone involved in the accident was 'really lucky' to escape further injuries.

'Where car ended up on the sun ledge, if you're familiar with that it's a real shallow part where people hangout in chairs and stuff.

'If somebody was sitting there, I mean, the unthinkable could have happened.'
