New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani's filmmaker mother has received millions of dollars in funding from Hamas-supporting Qatar, according to a new report.

Mamdani, 33, shocked the political world when he defeated Andrew Cuomo to win the Democratic nomination to run the Big Apple, campaigning on far-left policy and drawing controversy for his anti-Israel views.

His mother, Mira Nair, has received funding from Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad Al-Thani, the sister of the ruling emir, and the state-funded cultural institutions she controls, since 2019, the New York Post found.

Sheikha Al-Thani has also been promoting Mamdani's campaign on social media, sharing Instagram Stories that boast about his polling and commenting with fire emojis under a TikTok of the mother and son, the report found.

Qatar, which is a constitutional monarchy ruled by Sheikha Al-Thani's brother, has long been openly engaging with Hamas at a political level and acted as a negotiator between the terror group and Israel during ceasefire talks.

Hamas, which was designated as a terrorist organization by the US in 1997, seized control of the government in Gaza in 2007.

They launched the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, killing over 1,000 Israelis and taking hundreds of hostages, igniting the Israel-Hamas war.

Mamdani said he had never been to Qatar and had not received any financial assistance from country, the Post reported.

'The attempt to weaponize his mother’s career against him is an insult to voters who care about actual issues, not manufactured distractions,' said campaign spokeswoman Dora Pekec.

The Post found that in 2009, Nair's film 'Amelia' opened the inaugural Doha Tribeca Film Festival, organized by Sheikha Al-Thani's Doha Film Institute.

The film institute also underwrote a 'boot camp' to train Qatari screenwriting and filmmaking students at Nair's Maisha Film Labs in East Africa and in Doha, according to both organizations' websites.

Additionally, the Doha Film Institute paid the entire $15 million budget of Nair's 2012 film 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist,' according to the report.

The Post also found that a company Nair set up in her native India conducted $102,000 in business in 2022 and 2023 with Agence Publics Qatar. This event management firm shares its chairman with the significant oil and gas company Qatar Engineering & Construction Co.

Notably, in 2022, state-owned Qatar Airways and Sheikha Al-Thani's Qatar Creates produced a Nair-directed stage adaptation of her Golden Globe-nominated film 'Monsoon Wedding' as part of the World Cup festivities.

Qatar's 2022 World Cup faced major backlash for massive human rights violations, including reports of deaths, abuse and unpaid wages for migrant workers who built the stadium in sweltering heat

The Daily Mail has contacted Mamdani's campaign and state assembly office for comment.

Mamdani has campaigned on a series of woke policies that would drastically reshape the City that Never Sleeps.

He has said he wants to raise taxes on millionaires and corporations by $9 billion to subsidize his plans for fare-free buses, free child care and housing.

Mamdani, who is currently serving in the New York State Legislature, also wants to spend $65 million on transgender care and has pushed populist ideas including grocery stores that would be owned by the city.

Additionally, the controversial figure has advocated for defunding the city's police department - but vowed to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he were to set foot in the Big Apple.

Mamdani's outspoken support for Palestinian causes was a point of tension in the mayor's race.

He has called Israel's military campaign in Gaza a 'genocide' and said the country should exist as 'a state with equal rights,' rather than a 'Jewish state.'
