Pressure mounts on Rep Ilhan Omar as Ted Cruz warns she faces jail and deportation if 'incest' marriage is true

Progressive Representative Ilhan Omar was accused of marrying her brother so he could obtain US citizenship
Senator Ted Cruz has weighed in on Representative Ilhan Omar and issued her with a warning after allegations have swirled that the progressive congresswoman married her brother so he could become an American citizen.
Cruz shared an article on X, accusing Omar of the reported sham marriage, writing: 'If this is true, then Omar faces criminal liability under three different statutes.'
The Republican senator then cited three US laws, including Federal Marriage Fraud, State Incest Laws, and Tax Fraud.
Federal Marriage Fraud prohibits any American from knowingly entering into a marriage to evade immigration laws.
Meanwhile, all state incest laws prohibit marriage between close blood relatives, and Minnesota lists incest as a felony, with a punishment of up to 10 years in prison.
Lastly, Cruz stated the Tax Fraud law, which prohibits couples who are not legally married from filing joint federal tax returns and carries a fine of up to $100,000.
The wild allegations have plagued Omar for years, but have recirculated after Donald Trump peddled the theory while speaking at a recent rally in Pennsylvania.
Speaking about Omar, the president told the crowd: 'We oughta get her the hell out.'

Senator Ted Cruz said that if the allegations against Omar are true, which they have not as yet been confirmed to be, she would face criminal liability
'If I married my sister to get my citizenship, do you think I'd last for about two hours? Or would it be something less than that?' he continued.
'She married her brother to get in. Therefore, she's here illegally. She should get the hell out. Throw her the hell out,' he continued. 'She does nothing but complain.'
The Daily Mail previously reported the allegations in 2020, when Somali community leader Abdihakim Osman claimed Omar, 43, married her second husband, Ahmed Elmi, so that he could stay in the country.
'No one knew there had been a wedding until the media turned up the marriage certificate years later,' Osman previously told the Daily Mail.
Omar married her first husband, Ahmed Hirisi, in 2002 in a Muslim faith ceremony. The couple had three children together.
The couple later separated, and Omar briefly married Ahmed Elmi in a civil marriage until separating in 2011.
She reunited with Hirisi in 2012 and legally divorced Elmi in 2017. Omar and Hirisi were legally remarried in 2018, only to divorce a year later.
Omar is now married to Tim Mynett. The couple met when Mynett was working as her chief fundraiser during her congressional campaign.
He was married at the time, but divorced from his wife, Beth Jordan, in 2019. The two were married a year later.
The representative was born in Somalia's capital and fled with her family during the country's civil war.
She spent four years in a refugee camp before seeking asylum in the US when she was 12 years old.
Proof of Omar's rumored sibling relationship with Elmi has not been confirmed in official documents.
Omar has previously dismissed the claims that she married her brother for his citizenship. She told the Associated Press in 2018 that the claims were 'disgusting lies.'
Trump has launched multiple fresh attacks against Omar and the Somali community in recent weeks.
Earlier this month, he said at a cabinet meeting that Somali immigrants 'do nothing but b***h' and should 'go back to where they come from.'
He also berated Omar during the meeting, calling her 'garbage,' and adding that 'her friends are garbage.'
Donald Trump has repeatedly brought up Omar's alleged sham marriage in public appearances in recent weeks
On Thanksgiving, Trump issued a rage-filled post on Truth Social, ranting about the Somali community in Minnesota, and launching offensive attacks on Omar and Governor Tim Walz.
He claimed that 'Somalian gangs are roving the streets' and accused Walz of 'incompetence.'
Speaking of Omar, Trump added: ‘Probably came into the USA. illegally in that you are not allowed to marry your brother, does nothing but hatefully complain about our Country, its Constitution, and how “badly” she is treated.’
Omar addressed Trump on X on December 2 writing: 'His obsession with me is creepy. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs.'
