When TV news anchor Melanie Lawson fell out of her chair during a live broadcast it seemed to be a perfect TV 'blooper' moment.
U.S. chat show hosts picked up on the incident and joked about the clip they called 'Anchors Away'.
But they are no longer laughing after it was revealed Lawson suffers from multiple sclerosis and uses a cane to walk.
Keith Olbermann, who hosts a daily show on the cable channel MSNBC, issued a personal apology to Lawson after realising his error.
And Fox News, who replayed the blooper continuously at the weekend, have pulled it from their website after complaints from angry viewers.
The clip has also been pulled from YouTube.
Lawson, 46,who has won many awards for her reporting from around the world, has laughed off the incident.
Friends said she was not offended by the playing of the TV clip.
She had been anchoring the local news evening of ABC Channel 13 in Houston,Texas when the mishap occurred.
As she tried to stretch over and hand something to a weatherman sitting nearby she fell off her seat in full view of viewers.
TV viewers heard her cry 'Whoa!' before she continued, 'Oh well! So much for that. Go on with the weather, go on!'
After climbing back into her seat, Lawson went straight on reading the news.
In his on air apology Olbermann said he had no idea that Lawson suffered from multiple sclerosis.
He said she had made light of the incident, which was played on his show during a segment called 'Oddball'.
He said he had not known about her illness when he made his light-hearted comment.
Olbermann said: 'My friends tells me she is an inspiration to people in Houston, and now she is an inspiration to me to.'
