AT WHAT POINT DO WE WRITE SOMEONE OFF?

By Bob Walsh

Jerry Brown will be asked that question very soon in the case of the parole of Manson Family member Leslie Van Houten, now 66. She is up for parole for the 20th time. This time around the parole board in fact recommended that she be paroled, citing (among other things) her absolutely flawless record as a prisoner.

Ms. Van Houten had a somewhat rough life. Her parents were divorced when she was 14. She asserts that this event traumatized her. She got knocked up shortly after that and her mommy “forced” her to have an abortion. She asserts that further traumatized her. So she went to the desert, hooked up with Crazy Charlie and at age 19 was a direct participant in the La Bianca murders in 1969.

The LA DA vehemently opposes her release. The surviving members of the LaBianca family joint in that opposition.

So, does a less than perfect childhood and the ability to program for 46 years balance the scales of holding a pillow over the face of a woman while your buddies stab her to death? The parole board says yes. I wonder what Jerry will say?

EDITOR’S NOTE: None of Charlie’s followers who actively participated in the Sharon Tate and La Bianca murders should ever be paroled, their “absolutely flawless record as a prisoner” and their abusive childhood notwithstanding.

As for Leslie Van Houten, she personally also stabbed Rosemary La Bianca in the back.
