The most onerous of the anti-gun measures floating around the state legislature died yesterday. That bill, if passed into law, would have essentially killed off the entire retail firearms and ammunition business in the formerly great state of California.
However, the coast is not clear. There are still several virulent anti-gun bills going thru the process. They would, among other things, outlaw possession of any centerfire rifle with a removable magazine. Existing weapons would be confiscated without compensation. Standard capacity rifle and pistol magazines (incorrectly labeled large-capacity magazines) that happen to hold more than ten rounds that were legally purchased and are now legally owned would similarly become contraband and would be subject to seizure without compensation.
Similar bills which passed to his desk were vetoed last time around by Governor Brown. It seemed that his main problem with them was NOT philosophical but rather the notion of seizing legally owned property without compensation. Whether he will be similarly inclined this time around is unknown.
There is no doubt that legal ownership of firearms, especially non-PC firearms, is under serious attack in California. I wonder what is next. Maybe high-performance automobiles. Maybe motorcycles. Maybe sports parachuting. Who will be left to speak up for you later if you don’t speak up now?
