Four L A County social workers, including two supervisors, are facing criminal charges for such grotesque negligence in the death of an 8-year old boy that the DA says they share criminal responsibility. They are charged with falsifying public records and child abuse.
DCFS said yesterday (04-07) that all four were sacked last year after an internal investigation into the murder of Gabriel Fernandez, 8, of Palmdale. One of the four filed a successful appeal with the LA County Civil Service Commission and got his job back. The county is appealing that decision through the court system.
The arrest warrants filed ten days ago name Stefanie Rodriguez, 30, Patricia Clement, 65, Kevin Bom, 30, and Gregory Merritt, 60. Merritt, a supervisor, is the one who got his job back. All four were supposed to be arraigned on 04-07. The dead kid’s mother and mother’s boyfriend are in custody awaiting trial. The DA is going for the death penalty on them.
DCFS opened a case file on young Gabriel six months before he was beaten to death.
The social workers could be sentenced to as much as ten years as guests of the state if they are in fact found guilty.
