After 38 years on death row, the murderer croaks of natural causes
Jack Harry Smith was sentenced to death in 1978. He was on parole, having received a life sentence in 1959 for robbery, when he and a buddy attempted to rob a Houston convenience store. Roy Deputter, who lived near the store, tried to stop the robbery by pulling out his gun. The ensuing gunfight went badly for Deputter, leaving him toes up with bullet wounds to the heart and head. The cops busted Smith and his accomplice who testified against his buddy in return for a life sentence.
Numerous appeals have kept Smith on death row for 38 years.
On Friday, 78-year-old Smitty cheated the Great State of Texas out of an execution by croaking of natural causes. Shit!
