SUSPENDED MISSISSIPPI POLICE CHIEF COMMITS SUICIDE IN COP SHOP PARKING LOT.

By Bob Walsh

Mike De Nardo was the Chief of Police of Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. Thursday he was suspended from duty pending investigation of an “ongoing personnel issue.” He promptly turned in his department issued equipment, walked into the parking lot accompanied by two Hancock County Sheriff’s Deputies and shot himself in the chest. He died shortly after at a nearby hospital.

The mayor, Les Fillingame, confirmed that the chief was suspended and was under investigation, but also stated that it was his personal belief that the chief would be cleared of the charges against him. The mayor did not elaborate on what those charges were.

De Nardo had been chief since 2010, and was appointed by Mayor Fillingame.

The Sheriff’s Department will assume operational command of the police department until a new chief can be named.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Accompanied by two deputies? De Nardo must have been the fastest draw in the South.

I would guess that because he shot himself immediately after exiting the station, there was a woman involved in the personnel issue. He probably did not want to stick around and see his family embarrassed.

My guess was way wrong. He was under investigation for the illegal sale of an assault rifle.
