Former Trump campaign manager has just filed a civil action against the DOJ in general and the Special Counsel specifically, alleging they are wandering too far afield.
Manafort has been indicted for money laundering and conspiracy relating to his lobbyist work for a Ukrainian political party which happened well before he went to work for Trump. His is asserting that this line is well outside of the regulation that governs the actions of Special Counsels. He may very well have a point. It is my understanding that a special counsel can not even been legally cranked up unless they have a clearly demonstrated actual crime to actually investigate. That was not true when Mueller began what might be arguably called a witch hunt.
Manafort's lawyer has specifically asked Deputy A. G. Rosenstein if he approved Mueller's investigation scope. Rosenstein has, thus far, ducked.
