BRICK AND MORTAR RETAIL IS HARD

by Bob Walsh

Orchard Supply, a very respectable hardware store chain, is going belly up at the end of this year. Years ago they were bought by Sears, which was then bought by K-Mart, which then sold Orchard Supply to Lowe's.

I like Orchard Supply and do regular business with them. ACE hardware is OK but their stores tend to be much smaller and have a smaller selection. It is harder to find knowledgeable help at OSH, but it is much easier there than at the big box stores. If you only want some 5/16 lag screws or a couple of pounds of 10d nails, you go to OSH. IF you want 100 feet of fence, you go to Lowe's or Home Depot.

I will be damn sorry to see them disappear..
