BAIL DEAD IN CALIFORNIA

by Bob Walsh

On Tuesday Governor Moonbeam signed a bill into law which will, effective 01-01-2020, eliminate cash bail in the formerly great state of California.

Virtually all misdemeanor offenders will be released ORO in not more than twelve hours, no matter how many charges they have pending against them. Other people will be evaluated by a new bureaucracy which will determine that persons risk factors and whether or not they should remain in custody. Since shrinks are so good at predicting future dangerous behavior we should let another set of crackpots have a go at it.

This will, no doubt, result in a better level of fairness for certain low-level offenders. It will, however, without a doubt result in an upsurge of property crimes for things like auto burglary, auto theft and commercial burglary. Probably paper hanging too, though passing a bum check is harder than it used to be.

Why are the low level criminals even being arrested. Wouldn't it be easier for the cop to run a criminal history and if the offender did not meet a set standard, simply write them a citation?

Great idea, Trey.
