QUIS CUSTODIET IPSOS CUSTODES ?

Who Shall Protect Us From Those Who Protect Us?

by Bob Walsh

We are lucky in this country. Since about the end of WWII police corruption has been either localized or individual for the most part. In much of the world (i.e. Mexico) you can count on the police being corrupt and possibly incompetent as well.

Every once in a while, however, a black swan appears. Enter former DEA Agent Jose Irizarry, 44.

The high-profile DEA agent is now accused (not convicted) of complicity in money laundering with the very people he is supposed to be locking up.

Irizarry has a Columbian wife. The bad guy he is alleged to have worked with to launder a buttload of money is his wife's relative. Irizarry was working out of a DEA field office in Columbia and has apparently been unavailable for comment. It is not known if he has been arrested.

Irizarry resigned from the DEA back in 2017 when he was recalled from Columbia to D.C. He was considered to be a model agent and was even allowed to continue to work financial crimes after he filed personal bankruptcy back in 2010, citing $500,000 in personal debt.

Whoops.
