The
ownership and management of major league baseball has begun the ball
rolling on an imposed 60 game 2020 season after the players union gave
them a resounding UP YOURS on their latest LETS MAKE A DEAL proposal
with a vote of 35-5.
There
are a couple of things that could still gum up the works. The union
still would need to ratify a Covid-19 protocol, which perhaps they will
not. There is also the issue of the players being able to report to
training camp by July 1.
The
rejected agreement would have, among other things, forgiven some $33
million in player salary advances and created a guaranteed $25 million
playoff pool. Players would have got 104% of their full salary prorated
for the number of games played. The 60 game schedule is the shortest
since 1877. The standard season now is, at least in theory, 162 games
and has been there since 1962. (Babe Ruth might still have the home run
record if the season had not been expanded.)
