Smith is the Sheriff of Santa Clara County, CA. She has been under
scrutiny for some little while for some dubious dealings, especially
circulating around carry permits. Santa Clara County is notoriously
anti-gun (unless you are one of the favored few).
That
scrutiny has moved forward to a scathing report from the Civil Grand
Jury which flat-out accuses her of corruption and misconduct. The Grand
Jury accuses her of seven specific acts of misconduct / corruption.
six involve political favoritism regarding political favors and gun
permits. The seventh accuses her of stonewalling an investigation into
alleged negligence that led to a $10 million settlement with an inmate
over injuries received while in custody.
Smith has been the sheriff since 1998.
The
investigation could lead to he being removed from office. The County
Board of Supervisors has expressed NO CONFIDENCE in Sheriff Smith and
the mayor of San Jose, the largest city in the county, has called on her
to resign.
She is
required by law to respond to the Civil Grand Jury report. She is also
being required to appear in court on January 12 to address the
accusations.

One of the things I really like about Arizona is that any non-felon over the age of 21 can legally carry a firearm...openly or concealed...with or without a permit. I let my permit expire years ago. No need for it here.
Until about 1967 open carry in CA was technically legal, though large cities like LA and SF would often arrest open carry people for "disturbing the peace", confiscate their firearm and make them sue to get it back. The Black Panthers queered open carry by scaring the legislature when they "invaded" the state capital while armed and it turned out they were not breaking any laws. (Actually they were, an obscure section of the Fish and Game code.) The law was changed to outlaw open carry, on an emergency basis, in less than four hours from proposal to governor's signature.
Texas is a carry what and when you want state. Last week I saw a gun sale between two individuals in the paint section.
I think this is interesting. My son bought a raffle ticket for me for my Birthday. Being Texas, the raffle is called the 12 says of Christmas and a firearm is raffled off each day through Christmas. Last night I received a phone call letting me know that I had won a Sig Sauer 9mm. Nice. God Bless Texas and Merry Christmas!
