Mom’s marijuana edibles sickened students at Michigan school: officials

A Michigan mother made THC-infused edibles that sickened four of her child’s classmates who had to be hospitalized, authorities said.

The woman, who was not identified, is set to be arraigned Wednesday on a second-degree child abuse charge over the incident at Edgerton Elementary School in Clio, Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson said.

She allegedly purchased a jar of concentrated THC oil in August and later created her own gummies using gelatin, Swanson said.

The homemade edibles were then packed into a Life Savers Gummies wrapper and left out at home, where her child found them, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said.

The child brought them to school, where four of the 24 kindergartners in a class got “really sick” and were sent to a hospital, Swanson said. Each edible had up to 30 milligrams of THC oil.

“In less than 20 minutes, you have kindergartners unconscious, short of breath, lethargic, the school evacuated, the prosecutor contacted, sheriff’s office responding, kids taken to the emergency room,” a visibly upset Swanson said. “How did we get here?”

The mother faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted of the felony charge, Leyton said.

The superintendent of Clio Area Schools, Fletcher Spears, said the four sickened tots — who were 5 and 6 years old — were taken to a hospital in Flint. Three were released on Saturday, while the fourth went home Sunday, he said.

“All four were in school as of today,” Spears said Tuesday. “They’re all doing very well.”

The woman has other children in her home and Child Protective Services will be referred to the residence, Swanson said.

Recreational marijuana is legal in Michigan, but the careless mom was charged for allowing her unwitting 6-year-old to grab them from the refrigerator, Leyton said.

“We understand that mom probably just made a mistake here,” he said. “Nobody’s saying she’s a criminal. She made a mistake, but it’s a mistake that has caused a lot of havoc.”
