STEP ONE IN CLEANING GUN: MAKE SURE IT IS NOT LOADED

By Bob Walsh

When getting ready to clean a gun, make sure the damn thing is not loaded!

Francisco Villicana, 22, has been a Santa Cruz (CA) cop for eight months.  Friday evening he was cleaning his personally owned firearm when it went BANG, shooting himself in the hand and gut-shooting Luis Alfredo Ferro-Sanchez, who died.

So far the cops are reasonably convinced the situation was a tragic accident and nothing more, but Villicana is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.  He is almost certainly still on probation so this could have a very negative effect on his future in law enforcement.

The incident actually occurred in Salinas at an address on Antelope Drive which I am guessing is a private residence.  Officer Villicana reported the shooting himself.

That is one potential problem with Glock (and many similar design) firearms which are now prevalent within U S law enforcement.  They can not be disassembled for maintenance without pulling the trigger.  And no, I do not know for a fact that was the issue here.  It is an educated guess.

All guns are dangerous if you don't know what your doing. Glock has been around for quite some time and the majority of cops in the US carry them.

Canada refused to approve them for police use for many years due to this particular design characteristic.
