Kristin Smart was a resident of Stockton attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo back in 1996 when she disappeared. Paul Flores had long been suspected of her murder but the authorities could never put together enough to charge him. They were pretty sure he raped her or attempted to rape her in his dorm room, murdered her and then hid the body. They believe that Paul's father Ruben helped him hide the body, and then later helped him move the body. Her body has never been found.
Both men were arrested in April of last year. Yesterday he was found guilty of the murder, though his father was found not guilty of being an accomplice to the murder.
A podcast called YOUR OWN BACKYARD about the case generated new information that turned into real leads that turned into the arrests.
