I WONDER IF THIS IS SIGNIFICANT

By Bob Walsh

In this 2005 file photo, KGO radio personality Ronn Owens takes a five-minute break during the three-hour show on Oct. 24, 2005, in San Francisco.

I lived in the greater S.F. Bay Area for 25 years.  KGO radio, which is 98 years old this year, was a mainstay of broadcasting in the bay area.  From 1978 to the end of 2008 they were numero uno in the market.  They were a news-talk format station.  They did it very well.  Then they lost their perch.

In 2011 they went away from the news-talk format and went to straight all news.  Trouble is KCBS had that spot sewed up.  I listed to KCBS when I am going into the bay area because they do the best and most frequent traffic reports.  That flopped.  Then they went to nationally syndicated talk shows that did not fit well into the Bay Area demographic.  That flopped.  They then tried to move back into locally based good quality talk-news shows.  They had lost their audience and could not get any traction.

They stopped basic programming and are now THE SPREAD at AM 810.  They are essentially pimping the sports betting industry, presumably in the hope that one or both of the ballot initiatives that will permit widespread sports betting in CA will go forward.

Adapt or die.  It is, however, still a damn shame.
