Joseph Emerson was charged with 83 counts of attempted murder for each person on board the Embraer 175 plane
Emerson attempted to turn off the
engines by engaging the engine fire suppression system. The fire
suppression system - otherwise known as the engine fire handle -
consists of a T-shaped handle for each engine
Earlier Monday an Alaska Airlines pilot was dead-heading
in the jump seat from somewhere headed south to somewhere else. He
suddenly decided it would be a good idea to pop the fire bottles and
kill the engines. The cabin crew managed to discourage him. They
"pulled over' early, in Portland, and unloaded him to the cops. He has
been charged with about 90 counts of attempted murder.
I
follow aviation a bit and I only remember two incidents in the last 40
years where a member of the crew is known to have deliberately tried to
crash the plane. One was a FedEx cargo plane. The crew managed to
fight him off and restrain him. The other was in Europe. The pilot
flew the plane into the side of a mountain.
I
don't like to fly. I am not exactly fearful of flying but I don't find
the lack of control over my environment to be comfortable. I know
statistically it is quite safe.

FURTHER: The guy was loaded on magic mushrooms and had been "up" for about 40 hours prior to the incident. I strongly suspect that might have had something to do with it.
