Sounds to me like your dad was a bright guy. My best buddy in college was Jewish. His parents got the hell out when it became obvious things were turning to shit. They bought a bunch of Leica camera equipment which they could legally take out of the country with them and sold on the other side. His mom has some jewelry and gold sewn into her clothes. They went to the Canal Zone because they couldn't get a sponsor to the U.S. After the war they settled in Memphis. My buddies dad was a musician. It worked out OK for them, a damn sight better than it would have if they had not gotten out.
