A truck driver was leering at photos of half-naked women on his cell phone instead of watching the road when he slammed into police cars and fire trucks on an Arizona highway in May, killing an officer, records show.
Jorge Espinoza was going 65 mph on cruise control and had his wallet blocking a dash-cam meant to monitor drivers as he thumbed through Facebook pics of scantily-clad women in "provocative positions" moments before the May 6 crash, records obtained by the Arizona Daily Star showed.
Arizona Department of Public Safety Officer Tim Huffman, a 14-year veteran was killed in the wreck.
Huffman, 47, and other emergency responders were at the site of a previous crash in the eastbound lane of Interstate 8 in Yuma County when the cruiser he was sitting in was struck by Espinoza's rig.
Huffman was declared dead at the scene.
Espinoza, who was hauling an empty fuel tanker from Yuma to Phoenix, was not hurt. Two other cop cars and two fire trucks were also damaged in the crash.
The 33-year-old truck driver has pleaded not guilty to 20 felony charges, including second-degree murder.
He initially told investigators he did not see the responders' vehicles because he was watching a passing truck in his rear-view mirror.
But phone records showed he was surfing the web at the time, and footage taken from the dash-cam in his cab showed him driving with his head down looking at something in his hand.
Records also showed he'd used the Samsung Galaxy 3 to look at porn, escort sites, YouTube, Facebook and other websites while driving in the past, the Daily Star reported.
Espinoza is currently freed on $200,000 bond.
He's due back in Yuma County court in December.

I'm half surprised they granted him bond at all. I guess they have to, but that seems low for the charges he is facing.
