SHOPLIFTER SHOOTING RESULTS IN CHARGES

by Bob Walsh

Michael Dunn, 47, of Lakeland, Florida is a city commissioner. (I have no idea what that is, I suspect it is what I would call a city councilman.) Two weeks ago he confronted a shoplifter leaving a store. That man, Christobal Lopez, 50, had shoplifter a hatchet. Dunn shot and killed Lopez. He has just been indicted by a grand jury for second degree murder despite his claim of self defense under Florida's Stand Your Ground law.

It appears based on badly worded news reports that Dunn was a part owner of the store in question. Fortunately there is pretty good surveillance of the incident.

Lopez took a hatchet from a display and hid it in his pants. Dunn saw this from his office, armed himself and confronted Lopez. When he did so the hatchet fell from Lopez's pants onto the floor. At that time Lopez said that he would pay for the hatchet and moved toward the check-out. He then picked up the hatchet and tried to flee, with the hatchet still in his hand. Dunn grabbed Lopez by the arm. Lopez pulled away. Dunn shot Lopez. Lopez died.

The city has moved to suspend Dunn from his elected position. He is at this writing still a guest of the county.
