The San Francisco Sheriff's Office has officially dumped its internal affairs operation. Does that mean they are now 100% convinced that their department is 100% wonderful? No, not really.
What they have done is turned over their internal investigation authority to......wait for it......the Department of Police Accountability, a civilian review board. How would you like to have Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson determining your professional fate in the event that anybody made a complaint against you for any reason, no matter how bizarre. (I once repped a guy who had action initiated against him for passing forged meal tickets during a time frame when he was on vacation out of state and could prove it.)
What a bunch of PC weasles there must be running the Sheriff's Office in the People's Republic.
EDITOR'S NOTE:Since the city engulfs the whole county, all the sheriff's office does is operate the jail, provide the courts with bailiffs and maybe run a few subpoenas.

Most civilian review boards have no real authority. All they can do is make a recommendation to the city. Police Unions usually come out on top when they ask for the training documentation in internal affairs investigations from board members. It's all political nonsense. More cops will retire the and rest will just put on their time. Forget pro-active policing.
It works the other way too. A lot of Grand Juries are appointed by the Sheriff. Some serve for years and are given badges.
They do evictions too. Maybe three or four a year. It is almost impossible to evict a renter in SF, even for non-payment of rent. Takes months and months and months.
