An
interest case was just heard and decided in a court in Pakistan. A
14-year old Christian girl was abducted at gunpoint and forced into
marriage to her abductor. The Lahore High Court ruled on Tuesday that
she willingly converted to Islam and that the marriage is legally
valid.
The girl managed
to get away from her "husband" Mohamad Nakash and has been in a
shelter. Assuming the court judgement stands she would be required by
law to return to his household.
It
is said that as many as 1,000 women, mostly very young Hindu and
Christian women, are kidnapped ever year in Pakistan and forced into
marriage under similar circumstances.
Nakash,
who is already married, claimed the girl is 19 however her school
records support her parents claim that she is only 14. When this
information was brought forward the court ordered her moved into a
girl's shelter until the matter could be adjudicated.
Christians are about 2% of the population of Pakistan.
