Police are searching for two thieves who stole more than 40 bottles of fine wine from a hotel in a famous Spanish restaurant, including an estimated £ 262,000 worth of wine.
Purchased by the owner at an auction in Christie’s London over 20 years ago, the Château d’Yquem 1806 was the most valuable wine taken.
An English-speaking male and female thief suspected of committing a crime while arriving late and delivering food to his room was attacked at the Atrio Restaurant Hotel in Caceres, western Spain.
It is believed that he entered the wine cellar on the ground floor of the hotel before drinking 45 bottles of wine, including jewelry from the hotel owner’s collection.
The theft occurred early on Wednesday morning.
Jose Polo, one of the two owners of the hotel’s restaurant, told the local press: morning.
“When the kitchen staff brought the plate to the room, one of them went into the wine cellar and took the bottle in a bag.”
In an open letter to reporters, Mr. Polo and his co-owner Tono Perez added:

“What we suffer most is the death of Château d’Yquem in 1806. Château d’Yquem died 20 years ago and is one of the most beautiful stories of wine ever told. I was saved.
“The bottle was part of our personal history, almost part of me, part of the history of the hotel, but of Caceres, its citizens, and all lovers of the wine world. It was also a part.
“It’s Spain’s 215-year history, the era of war, peace and construction, an irreplaceable bottle.” The pair concludes the letter with the following words: “Our heart is broken. But we are ready to continue the fight. ”
The owner was also reported to have stated that due to its sentimental value, Château d’Yquem was not sold for € 1 million.
The total cost of the bottles taken is not officially disclosed, but is estimated at around £ 1.7 million.
Nearly 40 of the other wines taken were reportedly expensive Romane Conti.
The Atrio Restaurant Hotel’s fine wines average £ 10,000, one of which is the Montrachet Grand Cru 1999 Magnum, which costs £ 21,600.
The total cost of the bottles taken is not officially disclosed, but is estimated at around £ 1.7 million.
Police have not yet made official comments.
Atrio Restaurant Hotel’s wine cellar is considered the best in Spain and one of the best in Europe.
Built over the last 35 years since the landmark site opened, it has wines from 140 countries.

Food and catering critic David La Martinez said such fine wines are often traded as commodities.
