A major scandal involving the mob and major sports
figures hit the wires this morning. It hasn't all become clear yet but
it appears to have two primary forks. One involves point shaving by one
or more NBA players. The other involves Mafia run card games with
current and former NBA figures as shills. Some, maybe most, of these
card games were rigged solely to fleece high stakes gamblers who wanted
to rub elbows with jocks.
At
least one current player and one current coach were arrested by the FBI
this morning. Other NBA figures were arrested as well. The investigation
is on-going. It isn't clear how much the league was kept in the loop
prior to the arrests.
