Guadalupe County, located near San Antonio, has a population of some 130,00 Texans. It’s chief executive officer, County Judge Michael Thomas Wiggins, 58, is serving his second term. Prior to his election he had been a Texas DPS trooper for 14, and served as a sergeant in Guadalupe County.
Wiggins was attending a two day conference of county officials in College Station, home of Texas A&M University. He was staying at the Hilton Hotel. On Monday, about 11 p.m., a bellman called the College Station police to report that he had smelled burning marijuana on the fifth floor hallway of the hotel. Responding officers traced the smell to the room where Wiggins was staying. When he opened the door for the police, ‘an overwhelming odor of marijuana’ wafted out of the room.
Wiggins admitted that he had been smoking marijuana and consented to a search. The cops found a silver grinder, rolling papers and a plastic bag containing 20.1 grams of pot in his duffel bag.
Judge Wiggins was moved from the Hilton to a smaller hotel, the Brazos County Jail. He must not have liked his new accommodations because after a short stay, he was released on $3,000 bail.
On Thursday Wiggins told the Seguin Gazette, "There's nothing I can deny. It is what it is."
I’ve been to many a wild convention, mainly with either cops or teachers, where every evening evolved into utter debauchery. The conference of county officials must have been a real dull one for Wiggins to be in his hotel room by himself before 11 p.m., getting stoned on pot.
