A terror suspect accused of plotting the 9/11 attacks has undergone rectal surgery for an injury inflicted while he was in CIA custody.
Mustafa al Hawsawi suffered a rectal prolapse more than 10 years ago after being subjected to 'rectal re-feeding' - a process which his lawyer described as 'sodomy'.
On Friday night he was briefly allowed out of Guantanamo Bay to receive reconstructive rectal surgery. The operation lasted two hours.
'All they said is there was minimal bleeding and he is recovering,' his attorney Walter Ruiz told the Miami Herald.
The Saudi national reportedly sustained his injuries after he was force-fed via the 'nutrient enema' process when he went on hunger strike at a CIA 'black spot'.
Ruiz announced that Hawsawi would be having surgery during the suspect's pre-trial hearing.
Hawsawi is being tried along with four other men accused of planning the September 11 terror attacks in 2001 that left nearly 3,000 people dead.
He stands accused of providing supplies, money and clothing for the 9/11 hijackers.
His lawyer said the terror suspect has suffered for the past decade because he has to 'reinsert parts of his anus back into his cavity' when he has a bowel movement.
Mr Ruiz added that this 'causes him to bleed and causes him excruciating pain'.
He described the treatment as 'sodomy', according to the Miami Herald.
'Mr. Hawsawi was tortured in the black sites. He was sodomized,' Mr Ruiz said.
Hawsawi was captured in Pakistan in 2003 and faces the death penalty if found guilty of involvement in the attacks.
Before being transferred to Guantanamo Bay in 2006, al Hawsawi was detained for three years at CIA black sites.
The Senate intelligence committee's investigation into torture at these black sites found that Hawsawi was exposed to 'rectal exams that were conducted with 'excessive force.
Hawsawi was diagnosed with chronic hemorrhoids, an anal fissure and rectal prolapse, according to a December 2014 summary.
Hawsawi was denied permission to have any of his legal representatives present near the surgery, according to reports.

Maybe they should have put him in a cage and burned him alive. That would line up with his personal likes and dislikes better.
