It is no coincidence that the indictment was announced just 72 hours before the Helsinki meeting is to take place
First, let me get this out of the way. Yes, Russia meddled in the 2016 presidential election. They hacked into the DNC and the emails of John Podesta and Hillary Clinton. Then they set up websites that spread fake news about Clinton.
On Friday Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced the indictment of 12 Russian military intelligence officers, members of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, for hacking and publishing emails from the DNC and Clinton campaign. That indicates Putin at leasr was aware of the hacking. The indictments were sought by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
The indictment names the defendants as: Viktor Borisovich Netyksho, Boris Alekseyevich Antonov, Dmitriy Sergeyevich Badin, Ivan Sergeyevich Yermakov, Aleksey Viktorovich Lukashev, Sergey Aleksandrovich Morgachev, Nikolay Yuryevich Kozachek, Pavel Vyacheslavovich Yershov, Artem Andreyevich Malyshev, Aleksandr Vladimirovich Osadchuk, Aleksey Aleksandrovich Potemkin and Anatoliy Sergeyevich Kovalev.
OK, so we gotcha! But to me, the indictment doesn’t pass the smell test.
To begin with none of the 12 indicted Russians will ever be arrested and tried. The Russian government will simply refuse to let them be extradited to the United States. Mueller and Rosenstein know this. Mueller’s obvious intent was to show that Putin was involved in the attempt to submarine Clinton’s election chances.
Then there is the timing of the announcement. It was made just 72 hours before the Trump-Putin summit was to take place in Helsinki. Rosenstein could have waited and held his announcement after the Trump-Putin meeting on Monday had taken place.
That leads me to believe the announcement was timed to torpedo the Trump-Putin summit.
The Democrats reacted to the announcement by calling for the summit to be cancelled or for Trump to demand that Putin hand over the 12 indicted Russians.
This just another example of how Mueller is trying to destroy Trump’s presidency any which way he can.
I don’t know what the hell is going on with Attorney General Jeff Sessions. I know he recused himself from Mueller’s Russian collusion investigation, but he is still Rosenstein’s boss and should have ordered him to delay the announcement. Trump ought to fire both of them!
Speaking of meddling in foreign elections, America’s hands are not clean. We have had a long history of trying to defeat Latin American leaders. In 1973, the CIA went so far as to orchestrate a coup by the Chilean military that overthrew then President Salvador Allende.
In 2015, Obama tried to get Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defeated. The State Department gave $350,000 to Israeli non-profit organizations which used those American taxpayer dollars to help fund the campaign against Netanyahu. And at the urging of Obama, there were various liberal groups in the United States that were raising millions to fund a campaign called V15 against Netanyahu. All that money went down the drain as Netanyahu got reelected by a landslide.
