The walls of prisons in Palu and Donggala collapsed when the quake struck
The Indonesian government announced that up to 1,200 inmates escaped because the walls of three prisons collapsed when the quake struck. The prisons were located in the cities of Palu and Donggala. Apparently the walls could not withstand the liquefied earth.
While they may have been freed by the earthquake, where in the hell are the escapees going to? Everything in the quake’s path was devastated. The only way out is by military air transport which is closely guarded and supervised by Indonesian soldiers.
While the Indonesian government has acknowledged that all three prisons were badly overcapacity, I can’t help but feel that with all the devastation and a shortage of food and water, many of the escapees will wish they were back in prison.
