Baltimore Puts 230 Desk Officers on Streets as Murders Mount

BALTIMORE — A day after 11 people were shot in Baltimore, the troubled police department said it's shutting down its administrative functions so that more officers can hit the streets.
The Baltimore Sun reports Interim Commissioner Gary Tuggle announced Wednesday that 230 officers assigned to administrative duties will go on patrol, putting a total of 650 officers on the streets in a department struggling to fill 500 vacancies.
Tuggle says they'll keep desk officers on patrol until they're no longer needed or the department can no longer function with administrative duties going undone.
Both Mayor Catherine Pugh and Tuggle blame the violence on the illegal drug trade.
Baltimore has recorded 250 homicides so far this year, 44 of them in the last 30 days.

I PREDICT HALF OF THE BALTIMORE PD DESK JOCKIES WILL RETIRE BEFORE THEY HAVE TO HIT THE STREETS

Baltimore has been a shithole for over 30 years. Black on Black crime is rampant. Yes, Drug Dealers are a big problem.
Isn't this the same city that attempted to throw 6 police officers under the bus for the injured person who died after being transported in a van to jail? None of the officers were convicted. Wasn't the prosecutor facing possible charges herself based upon her conduct? I believe 80% of the cops disengaged after this incident.
These older waiting to retire cops aren't going to clean up crime in a city that has a history of not backing them. I predict half of the desk jockeys will retire before they have to hit the streets.
On the other side of the coin, Baltimore Police seem to have built up quite a reputation for corruption. Like I said, Baltimore is a shithole and I feel sorry for the honest citizens that have nowhere else to go.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Baltimore, Chicago, New York, St. Louis and LA, all Democratic strongholds, have high murder rates.
As for the desk jockeys who won’t retire, they’ll have trouble squeezing into and out of the patrol cars.

I am inclined to think you are right about the desk jockeys. If I was a ROTJ (retired on the job) old fart and 30 # overweight and I had the choice between retiring and moving to Florida or hitting the street I would be gone so fast they would have to mail my papers to me.
