YOU KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN EVENTUALLY

by Bob Walsh

A woman is suing Alaska Airlines and a dog owner for a mauling her five-year old daughter received from an "emotional support animal."

The attack took place in an airport rather than on an aircraft, so I am unsure of how much exposure the airline has here. In any case the little girl walked up and politely asked the owner if she could pet the dog. The owner said yes. When the girl reached out the dog attacked, biting her on the face.

The attack took place at the Portland Airport in December of 2017. It took place past the security checkpoint. The pit bull was not in a crate.

The suit for $1.1 million names the airport, the airline, and the dogs owner, Michelle Brannan. There are already $100,000 in medical bills and some of the little girls disfigurement is likely to be permanent.

Delta Airlines has recently totally banned "emotional support" animals. Since this incident Alaska Airlines has updated their policies on such companions. They acknowledged other incidents in which employees, passengers and other animals have been injured by animals.

Anyone can buy a dog harness that identifies it as a support animal. Most of them have not been trained.

A big city reporter was in Louisiana to cover a trial in a small Parish. A yellow Kerr dog was laying on the court house steps. The Sheriff was standing next to the dog. The reporter asked, "Sheriff does your dog bite?" The Sheriff said, "No." The reporter leaned down to pet the dog and it bit his hand. The reporter looked at the Sheriff and said, "I thought you said your dog didn't bite!" The Sheriff said, "That ain't my dog."
