ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY

by Bob Walsh

In 1066 King William of Normandy whooped King Harold at the Battle of Hastings, making William the ruler of Britain.

In 1912 former president Teddy Roosevelt was shot in an assassination attempt. The folded up copy of his speech in his jacket pocket absorbed most of the impact of the pistol bullet and he went ahead and gave his speech though wounded.

In 1930 Ethel Merman held a HIgh C for 16 bars while singing I GOT RHYTHM, stunning her audience.

In 1947 Chuck Yeager broke the sounder barrier in the Bell X-1 rocket plane.
