EPSTEIN GUARDS CHARGED

by Bob Walsh

Yesterday morning the two federal correctional officers who were sleeping 15 feet away from the cell when Jerry Epstein assumed room temperature were charged with fraud and conspiracy. They each made the $100,000 bail (presumably put up by their union) and were released.

The charges come from pencil-whipping the bed checks and the conspiracy charge from attempting to cover the mess up.

They should have KNOWN they would not be able to buffalo their way thru this one. They might not actually go to prison, but their jobs and presumably their pensions are now in the shitter.

I hear Burger King is hiring. Amazon warehouse too. Of course neither one of them lets you sleep on the job.

I would be wary of any accidental deaths or suicides befalling the guards.

Those of us who have actually worked in a prison and been mandated (forced) to work...not a couple of hours overtime but entire shifts on an ongoing basis, sometimes several times a week, know how easily this could have happened. We also know how unlikely it is that anyone could enter a secure facility such as this, strangle an inmate, and then exit that facility undetected. Even without cameras. Enough with the conspiracy theories already. Two very tired over worked correctional officers falsified entries in their log book to cover their failure to perform as expected. It shouldn't happen. But it does.

From earlier press reports, it seems like the facility was chronically short-staffed. There was mandatory overtime and people were working to the point of exhaustion.
I can understand how someone, dealing with these folks day in and day out could have skipped a few rounds to try to catch some rest. Not acceptable , but understandable and certainly not worth sending these folks to prison over.
