I think more public high schools should offer these programs. When was the last time you needed a plumber or electrician to do work that is up to code? These trades make a good living.
I have a friend who wants to retire but can't because his daughter attends Texas A&M. He works an extra job 3 days a week so she can have a degree to teach school at $40k a year?
Even in-state tuition is out of reach for many.
These trade programs work and cost nothing but school taxes that we are already paying.

The community college here in Stockton has some excellent "trade school" programs including a unique Electron Microscopy program that attracts international students. They also have a very good diesel mechanic program and a Psych Tech program that both have a very high job placement rate.
Community College, back in the 70's cost me something like 10 bucks a semester unit. State college 5 years later after I got out of the army was around 20 bucks a unit. That's how it should be. The outrageous fees being charged currently are criminal.
